{"id":959,"date":"2013-01-20T13:48:01","date_gmt":"2013-01-20T13:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/counsellingtu.onpressidium.com\/?page_id=959"},"modified":"2021-10-21T10:15:02","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T09:15:02","slug":"transactional-analysis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/transactional-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Transactional Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>Transactional Analysis Basic Concepts<\/h1>\n\t<p>Transactional analysis is a type of psychotherapy developed by Canadian psychiatrist Eric Berne in the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>Berne believed that communication with others comes from three distinct parts of self which he called <strong>ego states.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ego states are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parent <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adult<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Child<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/erick-berne.jpg\" alt=\"Eric Berne, founder of Transactional Analysis therapy\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"300\" width=\"248\" title=\"Eric Berne, founder of Transactional Analysis therapy\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<div id=\"cbox-vODZZySnaq10cn4g\"><\/div>\n\t<p>Berne wanted to develop a therapy which was easier for the general public to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Using &#8216;layman&#8217;s terms&#8217;,\u00a0 he went on to write a number of influential books. One of these books is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Q25RWpf6zo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;The Games People Play&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0which is still popular today, 25 years after it was first published.<\/p>\n<p>The theory of TA is (on the surface) is quite simple: Berne believed that people have difficulty in their lives due to how they communicate and interact with others.<\/p>\n<p>He believed that human beings have three distinct attitudes or states of mind which he called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/transactional-analysis\/ego-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ego states.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\t<h2>The 3 Ego States<\/h2>\n\t<ol>\n<li><strong>Parent<\/strong>\u00a0(behaving in ways which we learn and react out our parent&#8217;s behaviour as adults)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adult<\/strong>\u00a0(using logic and evidence to guide our behaviour, not becoming emotional)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Child<\/strong>\u00a0(replaying childish behaviours as adults)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\t<p>The goal of TA is to help clients strengthen their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/transactional-analysis\/ego-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Adult Ego State<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and enhance their communications with other people.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/transactional-analysis-ego-states.jpg\" alt=\"Transactional analysis - The Structural Model of Ego States suggests that our personality is divided, but not necessarily in equal proportions, into the Parent, the Adult and the Child ego states.\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"220\" width=\"210\" title=\"transactional analysis - The Ego States\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<h2>The Key Concepts and Principles of Transactional Analysis<\/h2>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/transactional-analysis\/transference-and-countertransference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Transference and Counter-transference<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0How memories from past\u00a0relationships can impact on your current relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"..\/..\/phenomenology-person-centred-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Phenomenology<\/strong><\/a>. How our individual perception can impact on how we conduct relationships (this idea is also the basis of\u00a0<a href=\"..\/what-is-gestalt-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gestalt<\/a>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<a href=\"..\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PCT<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"what-are-ego-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ego States -Structural and Functional Models in TA<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/a>Structural &#8211; The basic idea of ego states<br \/>\nFunctional &#8211; How the theory of ego states is applied<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"life-scripts-in-transactional-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Life Scripts<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0How messages we receive as children help us build a view of ourselves and others which through therapy we can change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong>Games<\/strong>.\u00a0How a series of interactions between two or more people follow predicable patterns and outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong>Racket feelings<\/strong>. Feelings that the child learns are acceptable and\/or desired, which are used to replace the real feelings which a parent may find unacceptable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ByUZI-DCiSM?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t<p>Clients are encouraged to\u00a0undertake <strong>homework<\/strong>\u00a0to assess how the therapy is working for them.<\/p>\n<p>The therapist analyses your past and how it affects the here and now, which is why it is known as an <strong>Active Directive form of therapy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>TA therapists believe that past life events (things that happened maybe in childhood) hold the key to understanding what our present difficulties are. This is known in TA therapy as the\u00a0<strong>presenting past<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t<h3>Free Handout Download<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Structural and Functional Models of Ego States<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#cbce9e3c54\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tClick Here to Download Free Handout\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h2>Types of Transactional Analysis<\/h2>\n\t<p>Since the death of Eric Berne in 1970, Transactional Analysis has developed along differing theoretical paths, sometimes referred to as &#8216;Schools&#8217;.<\/p>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong>The Classical School <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0sometimes referred to as transactional analysis proper, includes ego state analysis, life scripts and game analysis, is the original concept based on the work of Eric Berne,\u00a0Claude Steiner\u00a0and several close associates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong>The<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Redecision School <\/strong>&#8211; developed by Bob and Mary Goulding who integrated TA with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/what-is-gestalt-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gestalt<\/a>\u00a0to make a powerful, vibrant means of personal change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong>The Cathexis School <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0developed initially by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awakeningnetwork.net\/TA\/ScriptArticles\/MyTimeWithJacquiBaliAttack.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacquie Schiff<\/a> who worked with clients who had been diagnosed with severe mental health problems. Her approach was very controversial and was based on the theory of<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=0TzwDWwq5LAC&amp;pg=PA72&amp;lpg=PA72&amp;dq=cathexis+radical+reparenting&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=sNxSH2V6TS&amp;sig=ACfU3U2TOG9Edz7Wk7PN5fjGb3FfC1MVlg&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi1q5OAh8ThAhW_VRUIHc83AnYQ6AEwAHoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=cathexis%20radical%20reparenting&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0radical reparenting.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<p>Modern Schools of TA are referred to as &#8216;second wave&#8217; and have significantly influenced TA practice in recent years. Practitioners combine these new ideas with the Classical School to produce a contemporary, research-based approach to client work.<\/p>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong>Relational school <\/strong>&#8211; outlined by Charlotte Sills and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relationalta.com\/interviews\/helena-hargaden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helena Hargaden<\/a> in their book &#8220;Transactional Analysis a Relational Perspective&#8221;. This school draws strongly on the humanistic idea that the therapeutic relationship and empathy are central to the healing process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><strong> Integrative psychotherapy <\/strong>&#8211; developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrativetherapy.com\/en\/faculty.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Erskin<\/a>.
