This is sometimes called a &#8216;<strong>way of being<\/strong>&#8216;, with the counsellor demonstrating what is known as the\u00a0<strong>core conditions<\/strong>, which form the basis of the relationship.<\/p>\n\t<div id=\"cbox-vODZZySnaq10cn4g\"><\/div>\n\t<h2>The Key Features of the Person-Centered Approach<\/h2>\n\t<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/carl-rogers-core-conditions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Core Conditions<\/a><\/h3>\n\t<ol>\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong>\u00a0(the counsellor trying to understand the client&#8217;s point of view)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Congruence<\/strong>\u00a0(the counsellor being a genuine person)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unconditional positive regard<\/strong>\u00a0(the counsellor being non-judgemental)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\t<p>Person-centred therapy harnesses the client&#8217;s natural\u00a0<strong>self-healing<\/strong> process.\u00a0Given the right relationship with the therapist, clients can decide what they want to do with their lives.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, person-centred therapy is a personal growth model also known as <strong>non-directive<\/strong> therapy. The client is not taught the model of therapy or asked to undertake homework.<\/p>\n\t<h3>The Key Concepts and Principles of Person-Centred Counselling<\/h3>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/the-six-necessary-and-sufficient-conditions-for-therapeutic-personality-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Six Conditions for Therapeutic Change<\/a>.\u00a0Although the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/contracting-the-core-conditions-and-silence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Core Conditions&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0are well-known, there are three &#8216;Hidden Conditions&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/7-stages-of-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Seven Stages of Process<\/a>. How clients start to emotionally grow through the process of therapy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/carl-rogers-19-propositions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The 19 Propositions<\/a>.\u00a0Rogers&#8217; theory of personality based on the philosophy of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/phenomenology-person-centred-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phenomenology<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/locus-of-evaluation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Locus of Evaluation<\/a>. Humanistic Theory<\/h2>\n\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/biography-of-carl-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Ransom Rogers<\/a>\u00a0(January 8, 1902 &#8211; February 4, 1987) was an influential American psychologist, writer and contributor\u00a0to educational theory.<\/p>\n<p>With his contribution to psychotherapy research, Rogers\u00a0is widely acknowledged as one of the main contributors (along with Abraham Maslow and Otto Rank) to what is known as the <strong>&#8216;Humanistic&#8217; School of Psychology<\/strong> or the &#8216;<strong>Third Force in Psychology<\/strong>&#8216;, a phrase coined by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/maslow-hierarchy-of-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abraham Maslow<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Person-Centred-Approach-to-Counselling.jpg\" alt=\"The\u00a0person-centred approach to counselling\u00a0belongs to the\u00a0humanistic school\u00a0of therapy\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"206\" width=\"180\" title=\"Person-Centred Approach to Counselling\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>Honoured for his work in 1956 by the American Psychological Association\u00a0for his groundbreaking research, with the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions, Rogers also gained an award in 1972 from the APA for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Psychology.<\/p>\n<p>In later life, Rogers was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with differing groups in places such as South Africa and Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-reference-library\/level-3\/humanistic\/biography-of-carl-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rogers<\/a> produced a valuable body of work which includes theories such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/introjected-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introjected values<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/conditions-of-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conditions of worth<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-frame-of-reference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frame of reference<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/7-stages-of-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seven stages of process<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the 19 propositions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the other terms Rogers &#8216;coined&#8217; was the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/organismic-self\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;organismic self<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;, a reference to how an individual uses their thoughts and feelings to develop an emotional picture of who they are.
