{"id":6201,"date":"2017-05-23T17:15:45","date_gmt":"2017-05-23T17:15:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/counsellingtu.onpressidium.com\/?page_id=6201"},"modified":"2021-11-26T11:21:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T11:21:17","slug":"configurations-of-self","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/configurations-of-self\/","title":{"rendered":"Configurations of Self"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>Configurations of Self<\/h1>\n\t<p>The term Configurations of Self was originally coined by British counsellor and educator David Mearns (1999: 126).<\/p>\n<p>Mearns describes it as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8216;a number of elements which form a coherent pattern generally reflective of a dimension of existence within the Self&#8217;. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The theory is also sometimes known as &#8216;<strong>the dialogical self<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Configurations-of-Self-Man-looking-into-the-distance-in-deep-thought.jpg\" alt=\"Configurations of Self refers to 'a number of elements which form a coherent pattern generally reflective of a dimension of existence within the Self'\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"320\" width=\"220\" title=\"Configurations of Self - Man looking into the distance in deep thought\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<div id=\"cbox-vODZZySnaq10cn4g\"><\/div>\n\t<p>While the concept of configurations of self is a development in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/person-centred-approach-to-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">person-centred approach to counselling<\/a>, it has similarities with concepts from other modalities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8216;This development of the self theory of PCP [person-centred psychology] has conceptual similarities with object relations theory, to &#8220;sub-personalities&#8221; &#8230; and to ego state theory of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-approaches\/transactional-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transactional analysis<\/a>.&#8217; (Tudor and Merry, 2006: 128)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\t<h2>A Quick Overview<\/h2>\n\t<p>Configurations of Self is considered a recent development in Person Centred Therapy.<\/p>\n<p>It develops on Carl Rogers&#8217; view of personality being a single organismic whole (like a circle). Concluding within the sphere of our character, <strong>we have different parts of self that we access in certain situations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Try this experiment:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Draw a circle on a piece of paper.<\/li>\n<li>Think back over the last 24 hours.<\/li>\n<li>How many people have you been? The sad self, the happy self, the child self?<\/li>\n<li>Draw those parts in the circle &#8211; They are your configurations of self!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<h3>History of the Self in Person-Centred Theory<\/h3>\n\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/counselling-reference-library\/level-3\/humanistic\/biography-of-carl-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Rogers<\/a> saw the concept of self or &#8220;self-concept&#8221; as <em>a single configuration of perceptions<\/em>: &#8216;The self-structure is <em>an<\/em> organized configuration of perceptions of the self which are admissible to awareness&#8217; (Rogers, 1951: 501, emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>Cooper (1999: 58), on the other hand, suggested that &#8216;the individual may have the possibility of accessing &#8211; and switching between &#8211; a plurality of qualitatively distinct self-concepts&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Mearns and Thorne (2000: 102) developed this idea, suggesting that <strong>each person has multiple configurations of self<\/strong>, made up of &#8216;elements which form a coherent pattern generally reflective of a dimension of existence within the Self&#8217;.<\/p>\n\t\t<h3>Free Handout Download<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Configurations of Self<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#cb7ad5a019\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tClick Here to Download Free Handout\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h2>Configurations of Self in Counselling<\/h2>\n\t<p>The idea behind configurations of self is that <strong>we develop various alternative personalities that appear in certain circumstances<\/strong>. Each configuration has its own desires, needs, style and view of the world.<\/p>\n<p>During the course of a normal day, we may draw on various configurations of self. Tolan (2003: 74) writes: &#8216;They might be named by a client as &#8220;the strong, coping me&#8221; or &#8220;my scared little girl part&#8221;, or even given a name as in &#8220;Bully Brian&#8221; or &#8220;Whining Mary&#8221;.&#8217;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Configurations-of-Self-alternative-personalities.jpg\" alt=\"By exploring and examining their not-for-growth configurations of self in a safe, non-threatening and non-judgmental environment, the client can process their feelings, thoughts and behaviours - and so begin the process of checking the reality and impact of these on their lives.\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"600\" width=\"800\" title=\"Configurations of Self - alternative personalities\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>Many writers have referred to Rogers&#8217; idea of conditional positive regard: that a client may limit their own self-acceptance because of fear, shame, regret, embarrassment, anger, or a sense of loss about themselves or others.<\/p>\n<p>These negative emotions, or constructs, are sometimes referred to as &#8216;not-for-growth configurations&#8217;.
