Finally, in &#8216;Practice Matters&#8217;, Rory interviews a specialist in working with children.<\/p>\n\t<div id=\"cbox-vODZZySnaq10cn4g\"><\/div>\n\t<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;* BACPAC practice management software for counsellors and psychotherapists is a sponsor of the Counselling Tutor Podcast.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bac-pac.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Get a 30-day free trial of BACPAC and a 30% discount by using the discount code CT2020<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr>\n\n\t<!--more-->\n\t<h2>How to Create a Good Counselling Environment (starts at 1.50 mins)<\/h2>\n\t<p>This question on creating a good counselling environment was raised in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/472203952972076\/?source_id=178634356065334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Counselling Tutor Facebook group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not already a member, do come along and join in our discussions of current topics in the world of counselling and psychotherapy with thousands of counselling students, qualified counsellors, supervisors and counselling tutors.<\/p>\n<h4>Ken and Rory first talk about the ideal counselling environment, which should:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>be accessible (e.g. for wheelchair users) &#8211; of, if this is impossible to achieve, advance warning and the offer of onward referral be given<\/li>\n<li>meet health and safety requirements, including clients being made aware of the fire alarm and protocols<\/li>\n<li>have appropriate decoration, furnished professionally and comfortably, including no faith symbols and no family photos<\/li>\n<li>meet any individual client needs (e.g. a client with body dysmorphia may not want any mirrors in the room, or a client may be triggered emotionally by a specific colour)<\/li>\n<li>have a silent clock that is visible to both parties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In reality, all these elements may not be present, as Ken found in his own placement experience.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>minimal requirements<\/strong> for a counselling room are that it facilitates confidentiality in terms of both:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em> sound<\/em> (preventing anyone outside the room or in an adjacent room overhearing)<\/li>\n<li><em>vision<\/em> (so that any passers-by cannot see the client sitting there, for example through an external window or a glass pane in the door)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Following discussion with his supervisor, Ken took along his own &#8216;props&#8217; to help make the room feel like a good space for counselling.<\/p>\n<p>Rory has written a handout on how to create a good counselling environment. In fact, CPCAB does far more than this.<\/p>\n<p>Rory talks to Ray van der Poel (Head of Business and Development) about CPCAB&#8217;s initiative entitled &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newvisionformentalhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Vision for Mental Health<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the Power Threat Meaning Framework developed by psychologist&nbsp; Lucy Johnstone and colleagues, this seeks to <strong>shift how mental health is viewed and approached <\/strong>from the traditional biomedical model to a social model &#8211; <em>moving away from asking about symptoms and diagnosing a condition towards listening to and understanding the person&#8217;s story, lived experience and natural responses<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can find more information about CPCAB on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpcab.co.uk\/learners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its website<\/a>. CPCAB is the UK&#8217;s only awarding body run by counsellors for counsellors.<\/p>\n\t<h2>Working with Children (starts at 29.50 mins)<\/h2>\n\t<p>Psychotherapist and doctoral researcher <strong>Catherine Knibbs<\/strong> is a specialist in working therapeutically with children.<\/p>\n<p>In this segment of the Counselling Tutor Podcast &#8211;
