In &#8216;Practice Matters&#8217;, Rory then covers <strong>possible distractions in the therapy room<\/strong>, and <strong>how to deal with these<\/strong>. The podcast closes with some <strong>pointers on the type of questions<\/strong> you might get asked &#8211; and might want to ask yourself &#8211; at a <strong>counselling placement interview<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t<div id=\"cbox-vODZZySnaq10cn4g\"><\/div>\n\t<!--more-->\n\t<h2>What Defines the Therapeutic Relationship? (starts at 2.00 mins)<\/h2>\n\t<p>There are a number of <strong>elements that together define the therapeutic relationship<\/strong>. Psychologist <strong>Petruska Clarkson<\/strong> developed the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/petruska-clarkson-5-relationship-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five-relationship model<\/a><\/strong>, which provides one model for looking at this.<\/p>\n<h4>In Rory&#8217;s view, the following are some key elements in the therapeutic relationship:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>contracting<\/li>\n<li>seeing the essence of the client, as described by Martin Buber as having an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2018\/03\/18\/i-and-thou-martin-buber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u00ad-Thou relationship<\/a><\/li>\n<li>understanding transference and countertransference<\/li>\n<li>modelling stability while being congruently human too, with all our imperfections<\/li>\n<li>being able to repair fractures in the relationship, e.g. through the use of immediacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Research has shown that the <strong>therapeutic relationship is the single most important fact in the success of therapy<\/strong>. Ken sees the therapeutic relationship as<strong> idiosyncratic<\/strong> &#8211; in other words, each is unique, and <strong>depends on the two people involved and how they connect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Clarkson&#8217;s book <strong><em>The Therapeutic Relationship<\/em> <\/strong>looks at the <strong>uses and abuses of the therapeutic relationship<\/strong> in counselling, psychology, psychotherapy and related fields.<\/p>\n<p>Rory has done a <strong>lecture on Clarkson&#8217;s model<\/strong>; this is available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/student.counsellingtutor.com\/login\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Counselling Study Resource<\/a> (CSR). You can also view a lecture there on transference and countertransference, which is highly relevant to the quality of the therapeutic relationship.<\/p>\n\t<h2>Distractions in the Therapy Room (starts at 12.07 mins)<\/h2>\n\t<p>This topic was raised recently in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/472203952972076\/?ref=bookmarks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook group<\/a> (where you&#8217;ll find over 22,000 others involved in the world of counselling and psychotherapy, including students, qualified counsellors, supervisors and tutors).<\/p>\n<p>Rory reflects on his 17 years of clinical practice, recounting a number of <strong>distracting experiences<\/strong> he has encountered &#8211; from disco music to fire alarms! He provides <strong>tips on how best to deal with such distractions<\/strong>, including <strong>putting these in the client&#8217;s clinical notes, discussing what happened with the client,<\/strong> and <strong>keeping a sense of humour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Rory has written a handout on this topic, which you can download here &#8211; or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/handouts-vault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Handouts Vault<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/student.counsellingtutor.com\/login\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSR<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t<h2>Counselling Placement Interview Questions (starts at 17.54 mins)<\/h2>\n\t<p>Again, this topic regularly arises in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/472203952972076\/?ref=bookmarks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook group<\/a>. Even if you are already on placement or have completed this, the tips here may well be <strong>relevant to jobs for qualified counsellors too<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You may find you have to <strong>participate in both a group interview and an individual interview<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Important areas to think about before your counselling placement interview and to be ready to answer questions on are:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>ethical issues (e.g. whether or not it is OK to touch a client)<\/li>\n<li>your own personal development<\/li>\n<li>prejudices you may be aware of in yourself<\/li>\n<li>confidentiality and the limits to this<\/li>\n<li>your availability for work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is a good idea to do some <strong>research on the organisation and its specialist area<\/strong> (if relevant) before the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that the interview is <strong>not just a one-way process<\/strong>. You have much to offer the agency: students are naturally <strong>highly up-to-date with theory and subject to continual observation of their skills<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So do think about what <strong>questions you can ask them<\/strong>, for example <strong>what support and training they will provide for you<\/strong> and w<strong>hat the counselling rooms are like<\/strong> (you could even ask to look).<\/p>\n<p>If you feel uncomfortable with what you see and hear, then <strong>don&#8217;t be afraid to look elsewhere<\/strong>.
