{"id":33399,"date":"2018-09-26T10:28:15","date_gmt":"2018-09-26T09:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/counsellingtu.onpressidium.com\/?page_id=33399"},"modified":"2021-09-29T18:54:31","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T17:54:31","slug":"reflexivity-in-counselling","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/reflexivity-in-counselling\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflexivity in Counselling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>What is Reflexivity in Counselling<\/h1>\n\t<p><strong>Reflexivity in counselling<\/strong> practice incorporates the <strong>therapist&#8217;s experience<\/strong>, thoughtfully using the therapist&#8217;s relationship with themselves and their experiences <strong>to inform their responses<\/strong> in the therapeutic relationship.<\/p>\n\t<p>Reflexive practice in counselling and psychotherapy is a <strong>proactive and dynamic process<\/strong> whereby the counsellor uses their thoughts, feelings and reflections on the therapeutic work as a basis for action.<\/p>\n<p>Put simply, when <strong>a therapist&#8217;s contribution to the work is influenced in a thoughtful and responsive way<\/strong> by what is happening in the relationship, <strong>they are practicing reflexively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/being-a-reflexive-counsellor.jpg\" alt=\"Reflextivity in counselling practice\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"280\" width=\"400\" title=\"Reflexivity in counselling\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<div id=\"cbox-vODZZySnaq10cn4g\"><\/div>\n\t<h3>The Difference between Reflective and Reflexive Practice<\/h3>\n<p>When a <strong>therapist practices reflectively<\/strong>, they put<strong> time and energy into thinking<\/strong> about and reflecting upon the therapeutic relationship, the issues the client has brought, or a number of other factors which might affect the work with a client.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reflexive practice is a transformative process<\/strong> which harnesses the ideas emerging from reflection, converting thoughts into action.<\/p>\n<p>Reflexive practice is often understood to <strong>incorporate the therapist&#8217;s experience<\/strong>, thoughtfully using the therapist&#8217;s relationship with themselves and their experiences to inform their responses (Etherington, 2016).<\/p>\n\t<h3>Reflexivity in Counselling and Self-awareness<\/h3>\n\t<p>David Rennie (2004) defines reflexivity as <em>&#8220;Self-awareness and agency within that self-awareness&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This means that when the therapist&#8217;s actions are rooted in reflexive practice, the <strong>therapist will have an understanding of their own internal experiencing<\/strong>, which allows them to access and reflect upon their responses, as well as the self-knowledge and ability to put their perceptions into action in a way which will <strong>benefit the client<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n\t<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/counsellingtutor.com\/personal-development-in-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Self-awareness<\/a> is crucial for reflective and reflexive practice<\/strong>; if the therapist cannot make sense of their own responses to any aspect of the therapeutic process with a client, they will not be able to ascertain how their experiences might be useful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-awareness is an ongoing process for any practitioner<\/strong> &#8211;
